Making educational content available in another language is always a challenge, and even more so when the content is highly specialized. For instance, translating e‑learning content from French to English isn’t just about replacing words, it’s about preserving technical precision, academic rigour and pedagogical logic, and, in this case, reflecting English terminology that is unique to Quebec’s CEGEP system.

This was precisely the challenge Versacom took on in assisting Cégep à distance with the translation of an entire pre-university course for an English audience.

 

The intellectual and linguistic work of translating a technical course

“The project involved translating all the materials for the Quantitative Analysis in Social Science course into English. This is a CEGEP-level course required for a diploma of college studies in the humanities. The project was carried out over many weeks, from September 2024 to March 2025, with batch deliveries on a regular basis.”

 

A translation demanding specialized knowledge

Some projects require more than just exceptional language skills. Yet, when a course covers technical concepts, translators also have to understand the subject matter to deliver accurate content. This course mostly covers concepts from mathematics and statistics, fields in which even the slightest misstep can have a big impact on learning.

“The course was well suited for translation, but the course material required that translators have somewhat of a background in math and stats to make sure the English educational content was valid. We absolutely needed to work with specialized translators who could understand the material and produce a high-quality English-language course.”

 

When academic rigour and linguistic expertise intersect

Eager to tackle this challenge, Versacom assembled a small team of specialized translators with the skills needed to preserve the content’s academic and linguistic integrity. Thanks to this expertise, the English version of the course fulfills the program’s learning objectives.
